Description

After running a machine with 1 gig of ram and a single core processor for 6 years, I've finally upgraded to a new machine.

One of the first things I did was download 3ds Max 2012 from the autodesk educational community. It's so fast.

To quickly test out the new mental images renderer, iray, I rendered a car I designed and modelled couple years ago. I used the studio setup provided by Jeff Patton, with little modification. It can be found here: [link]

At full HD res, this image (which contains very little postwork) rendered off in about 6 minutes. I am used to a render like this taking around 10-12 hours!

The little bit that I've played with iray, it seems very fun and easy to use. I especially like that geometry can be used for lighting...and it gives physically correct results quickly. There are some serious material limitations right now, so hopefully they allow more materials the next time around.

I may redo the render, or at least the floor with a proper ground texture.

New machine specs:

i7-2600k CPU
16 GB RAM
2 GB nvidia GTX 460 (I'm tempted to get another just to see how fast things will render)

awesome render..!! I would like to know, that whether you set up the lights in iray, or it does it automatically?
I was just thinking that, we just need to import the model, assign the materials, and set the camera angle, and the render will come automatically.
Or is it possible to get studio renders with default environments given, without tweaking the light that much. You might be knowing that it was painful to achieve that render previously without iray.
I mean can you tell us what steps you followed to do that, in detail if possible..?? It'll help a lot.
