The Charm Maker's Cottage - 3D by drewbrand The Charm Maker's Cottage - 3D by drewbrand
A few months ago (in the summer actually) I had asked Jeremy Vickery ([link]) if I could model his concept "The Charm Maker's Cottage" [link]

He graciously said yes :)

His style is amazing. Very well suited to 3D - I would love to model everything he's ever drawn.

Finally, I am getting around to posting it. Modeled over the course of 3 months. Probably the longest I've spent on a 3d model - but I learned so much.

Modeling = 3ds Max 2012.
Texturing = Mudbox 2012.
Rendering = mental ray.
Postwork = Photoshop.

You can see a clay/wireframe render of it here: [link]

What approach did you use to make the thatched roofing? I'm working on a cottage project myself and I'm not sure the best way to approach it.

I just used a fairly simple fur and hair system on the roof.  If you take a look at the wireframe drewbrand.deviantart.com/art/T… you can see the underlying geometry that gives the horizontal layering effect.

Thanks.

Yes, it was done in 3ds max, rendered with mental ray. Nothing too fancy was done with lighting. I used a main directional light for the sun, a skylight tinted blue and then a few fill lights to lighten the darker shadowed areas and get the look I wanted. Shadows were just raytraced shadows. It was rendered with low final gather settings.

Hope this helps?

I really love the way you made the original concept come to life using 3D software! It definitely gives a nostalgic, storybook feeling to it. As a complete novice to the world of 3D, I think you did a wonderful job! (:

Wonderful ! I do not know if I have the patience to work three months on a model! my jaw dropped when I think of the "quality" of the modeling.

Well it definitely was not a solid 3 months spent....but over the course of 3 months! Andrew that includes lighting the scene and texturing the scene. As well as going to the movies, out for dinner, building an iPhone game, relaxing on the weekend, a regular day job etc...generally living life ;)

awesome Jeremy i had seen the drawing before and is there any reason for choosing 3ds max instead of maya

The only reason for using Max instead of Maya is that I use Max all the time and am more comfortable using it.

This is...stunning. Positively stunning. Did you model this through Max using mental ray? Or did you use a separate rending program? This piece is such a huge inspiration for me. I'm just starting my thesis in Game Design and I want to make one of my environments in a style like this. Beautiful beautiful work. Thank you for posting this.

Thanks for the praise! ;)

I modeled the scene in max and detailed and then each piece was exported to mudbox for detailing and UV's and texturing. Then, I exported a low level of the mesh back to 3ds max to setup materials using baked out normal maps. Rendered it in mental ray directly in 3ds max.

If you love this style, I'd reccommend checking out Jermilex: (www.jermilex.deviantart.com. He did the original concept art.

Yeah. I've seen his work. It's amazing. I need to learn mudbox. I usually use a separate UV program and then do textures in Photoshop, to be applied in Maya.
Great stuff, man. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

Mudbox is great...super easy to learn too. If you use mudbox for UV's, it just does a non nonsensical layout that you could never edit in Photoshop. They pretty much have to be painted in Mudbox.
